It’s important to remember that all gas work in South Africa is regulated. In terms of the Pressure Equipment Regulations, any gas installer must:

  • Be qualified and registered with the LP Gas Association of South Africa (LPGSA)
  • Be registered with the South African Qualification and Certification Committee for Gas (SAQCCGas)

Using a registered and certified installer ensures your installation is safe, legal, and compliant with national standards.

The easiest way to locate a registered gas installer is via the SAQCCGas website:

Why You Must Use a Qualified Gas Installer

Even if the installation of a gas appliance seems straightforward, it is critical to use a qualified and registered gas installer. In South Africa:

  • Warranty Requirement: Most appliance warranties are only valid if installed by a qualified gas installer. Using an unqualified installer will void your warranty.
  • Legal Compliance: South African law has strict regulations regarding gas piping, appliance installation, and cylinder storage. Improper installation can make you legally liable in the event of an accident.
  • Safety Assurance: Qualified installers are trained to ensure your installation meets safety standards, reducing the risk of gas leaks, fires, or explosions.

Once your appliance is installed, your installer will issue a Gas Certificate of Compliance (CoC).

  • Keep this certificate in a safe place.
  • Manufacturers will not honour the appliance warranty without it.
  • Household insurance companies require a Gas CoC before processing any claims related to your gas appliances.

⚠️ Important: Always ensure your installer is registered with SAQCCGas and holds the appropriate qualifications for your type of gas appliance.

Ensuring that your gas installation is carried out safely and legally starts with verifying the installer’s credentials

All registered gas installers are issued with an official identity card. This card contains:

  • A photograph of the installer
  • The installer’s full name
  • Authorisation number
  • Grade (Domestic, Commercial, or Autogas)

⚠️ Important: Always ask the installer to present their ID card before work begins. Never allow gas work to commence without confirming their credentials.

By law, installers are required to:

  • Issue a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) after the completion and commissioning of any fixed installation.
  • Provide instructions to the end-user on the safe operation of the installed appliance and gas system.

This CoC is essential for:

  • Validating your appliance warranty
  • Complying with household insurance requirements

If you are unsure about an installer’s qualifications:
