Gas Safety

We often take for granted that our gas geysers, cookers, and gas fireplaces are safe. It’s only when something goes wrong that we realise the importance of proper installation and maintenance. Gas is powerful, convenient, and efficient—but it must be handled responsibly.

Dangerous or unqualified gas work can be deadly. Poorly installed or serviced appliances can cause:

  • Gas leaks
  • Fires
  • Explosions
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Suffocation due to poor ventilation

⚠️ Important: LP Gas is hazardous. Like electrical work, only a qualified and registered installer should install, repair, or service your gas appliances. DIY work is extremely risky and can endanger lives and property.

Insurance Alert: Many insurance policies may refuse claims if a fire or accident occurs due to improperly installed gas appliances.

The minerals in hard water accumulate inside pipes, fixtures, and water heaters, forming a layer called scale. When water is heated, scale formation accelerates.

In gas geysers, scale build-up reduces heat transfer efficiency. This means:

  • The geyser takes longer to heat water
  • More gas is consumed
  • The geyser’s lifespan is shortened
  • Mineral deposits can occupy space inside the tank, reducing usable hot water capacity

Scale can also cause the geyser to overheat, leading to rumbling noises as trapped mineral deposits lift in the water.

How to Manage Hard Water in Gas Geysers

  1. Install a Water Softener
  • A water softener removes minerals before they reach the geyser.
  • Whole-house systems protect all plumbing fixtures, not just the geyser.
  • Note: Water softeners require regular maintenance, so factor in the ongoing upkeep.
  1. Regular Draining & Flushing
  • Manufacturers typically recommend every six months, though some suggest every 2–3 months in very hard water areas.
  • Steps include:
    1. Turn off the geyser.
    2. Attach a hose to the water outlet.
    3. Open an inlet at the top to allow air in and drain the tank.
    4. Flush the tank several times until the water runs clear, ideally with a water and white vinegar solution.
    5. Refill the tank, turn it on, and bleed any trapped air from the pipes.

⚠️ Warning: Older geysers or those not regularly maintained may rupture during flushing, potentially requiring a new unit.

  1. Accept More Frequent Replacement
  • Some homeowners choose not to maintain the geyser and accept shorter lifespan due to hard water.
  • Being aware of the problem allows you to plan and budget for future replacements.

Everyone should understand how to safely use gas appliances:

  1. Read all instructions that come with your LP Gas appliance.
  2. If you smell gas:
    • Extinguish all flames and smoking materials immediately
    • If safe, turn off the cylinder valve (turn clockwise)
    • Leave the area immediately and call your local fire department
    • Have a qualified gas installer inspect the appliance and cylinder before restarting
  1. Always use a registered installer
  • Only a SAQCCGas-registered installer can legally install, repair, or service your gas geyser, cooker, hob, or fireplace
  • They will provide a Certificate of Conformity, confirming the work meets LPGSA/SABS standards
  1. Always check the installer’s ID card
  • Registered installers carry a SAQCCGas Registration ID card
  • The card shows the installer’s photo, qualifications, and a unique registration number
  • Verify the ID number and surname on the SAQCCGas database: www.SAQCCGas.co.za
