Gas Geysers – Troubleshooting for Standard / Manual Gas Geysers

If your Standard Gas Geyser isn’t working properly, follow this step-by-step guide to diagnose and fix common issues.

If your geyser is making a clicking noise but the water isn’t heating:

  • Check the batteries – they typically last 6 months, depending on usage. Remove and inspect the spring connection inside the battery compartment.
  • Check your gas supply – ensure the cylinder isn’t empty.
  • Vacuum lock – if you recently replaced the gas cylinder, remove the gas pipe from the regulator, turn on the cylinder for a few seconds, then reconnect and turn it back on.
  • Regulator age – a regulator older than 3 years may restrict gas flow. Replace with a good-quality regulator.
  • Avoid rogue cylinders – cheap or uncertified cylinders may contain impure gas, which can prevent proper geyser operation.

If there is no clicking noise when opening the hot tap:

  • Batteries In Stand Geysers/ Constant Temperature Geysers may need replacing.
  • Water pressure – Standard Gas Geysers require sufficient pressure. Borehole water pumps may fluctuate, preventing ignition. Consider installing a pressure pump to stabilise flow.
    • Quick test: Turn the geyser’s water adjustment knob fully clockwise. No clicking usually indicates low water pressure.
  • Water inlet filter – Located inside the inlet pipe. If clogged, the geyser won’t ignite.
    • Solution: Unscrew the inlet pipe, remove and clean the filter, then replace.
  • Check batteries – low voltage may cause shutdown
  • Check water pressure – insufficient pressure can trigger automatic shut-off
  • Water Saver Showerheads – any form of flow restriction in a showerhead will cause a Standard Geyser to shut off. Only normal through-flow showerheads can be used.
  • Often caused by mixer taps:
    • Turn on hot water first, then slowly add cold water to reach the desired temperature.
    • High cold water pressure may back-feed into the geyser, causing it to switch off.
  • Solution: Install a non-return valve between the geyser and the hot taps.
  • In hot regions, avoid using the Winter temperature setting unnecessarily, as overheating can require more cold water, which may back-feed into the geyser.
  • Check if other hot taps are running simultaneously – Standard Gas Geysers split capacity between taps, and opening multiple taps can reduce hot water temperature.
  • If too many taps are in use, the geyser may automatically switch off.
  • Ensure temperature settings are correct (Summer/Winter)
  • Check that gas inlet adjustment is fully open
  • Check that water inlet adjustment is fully open
  • Verify gas cylinder is fully turned on
  • Check for a faulty regulator
  • Ensure cylinder has sufficient gas

⚠️ Important Notice

If none of these steps resolve your issue, contact your registered gas geyser installer.

Geysers showing smoke, unusual noises, or erratic operation should be serviced immediately.

Regular maintenance helps prevent long-term damage and ensures safe operation.
