Gas Geysers & Hard Water / Borehole Water
Hard water contains significant amounts of minerals, especially calcium and magnesium. You may notice hard water when a pot of boiling water leaves white residue on the sides and bottom. For a precise measurement, laboratory water testing can determine the exact hardness.
Why Hard Water Matters for Gas Geysers
The minerals in hard water accumulate inside pipes, fixtures, and water heaters, forming a layer called scale. When water is heated, scale formation accelerates.
In gas geysers, scale build-up reduces heat transfer efficiency. This means:
- The geyser takes longer to heat water
- More gas is consumed
- The geyser’s lifespan is shortened
- Mineral deposits can occupy space inside the tank, reducing usable hot water capacity
Scale can also cause the geyser to overheat, leading to rumbling noises as trapped mineral deposits lift in the water.
How to Manage Hard Water in Gas Geysers
How to Manage Hard Water in Gas Geysers
- Install a Water Softener
- A water softener removes minerals before they reach the geyser.
- Whole-house systems protect all plumbing fixtures, not just the geyser.
- Note: Water softeners require regular maintenance, so factor in the ongoing upkeep.
- Regular Draining & Flushing
- Manufacturers typically recommend every six months, though some suggest every 2–3 months in very hard water areas.
- Steps include:
- Turn off the geyser.
- Attach a hose to the water outlet.
- Open an inlet at the top to allow air in and drain the tank.
- Flush the tank several times until the water runs clear, ideally with a water and white vinegar solution.
- Refill the tank, turn it on, and bleed any trapped air from the pipes.
⚠️ Warning: Older geysers or those not regularly maintained may rupture during flushing, potentially requiring a new unit.
- Accept More Frequent Replacement
- Some homeowners choose not to maintain the geyser and accept shorter lifespan due to hard water.
- Being aware of the problem allows you to plan and budget for future replacements.
⚠️ Important Notice
Most gas geyser brands do not cover hard water damage under warranty. Proper water treatment or maintenance is essential to protect your investment.
